Take Hold of What Is REALLY Life

What does it mean to live life fully?  A google search of that question yields 100’s of lists, books, and websites.  A quick perusal of them shows a couple of things at the top of the lists.  The first is to “live true to yourself”- you make the rules, you set the standards and you please yourself first.  The second most common is to “live for the moment”- you concentrate on the present and have no concern for the future.  This week we’ll see what Paul says it means to “take hold of what is REALLY life.”  Spoiler alert…it has to do with helping others and living for eternity.

Fight the Good Fight

We’re in the last part of 1 Timothy and the tone ramps up.  Paul exhorts Timothy “Oh Timothy, you’ve got to flee!  You’ve got to pursue!  You’ve got to fight!  You’ve got to take hold!”  Why all this action?  And where do we get the energy and perseverance to flee, to pursue, to fight, to take hold?  Paul tells Timothy that he has two great sources to draw from: God the creator and Jesus the faithful witness.

Worthy of Double Honor

How often do we make giving honor a part of our daily or even weekly lives? All too often we see leadership as something to constantly criticize and critique. In 1 Timothy 5:17-25, Paul encourages Timothy to give the elders of the church double honor. The calling to lead God’s church is a difficult one. Join us this Sunday as we consider what double honor even is and how we can show honor to those who lead us well. 

Cultivating Honor in the Family of God.

God’s family is known by our love for each other, and we love each other by honoring every person in our family, beginning with those who may feel least among us. 

Few things are more COUNTER-CULTURAL than this. A church that cultivates honor for every member of the family will shine bright in our world today.

Can Others See Your Progress?

In our passage in 1 Timothy, Paul challenges this young pastor to pursue growth in his service to Christ so that “all may see [his] progress.” That admonition has been such a challenge to me personally as of late. I have wondered, “When others look at my life, can they see my progress?” This Sunday we will look at very practical ways that you and I can pursue growth in our spiritual lives, so that 6 months or a year from now, those around us will be able to say, “I see your progress!”

Great is the Mystery of Godliness

Do you like mysteries? Some of the best are the Sherlock Holmes detective series. As you read you try your best to figure it out. In the end, Holmes explains the details and clues that led to the final conclusion, and his sidekick Watson marvels. "Why Holmes, the evidence was in front of our noses the whole time! Now that you've put it all together, it's no mystery at all!" And Holmes replies with his famous line "Elementary my dear Watson, elementary."  

Come to New King this Sunday and learn about the greatest mystery of all time. The evidence is there and once we put it together we marvel and exclaim "Great indeed is the mystery of godliness!"
